We are going to miss Richard so, so much. We have so many fond memories of our trips to visit Rich, Cathy and Evan at the farm, Nantucket, the boat basin, and holidays in Stanley (particularly the Thanksgiving Rich and I had to cook the turkey dinner because everyone else had the flu). We all have loved Rich from the bottem of our hearts. I wish we could be there for the service today. Damn the Corona virus! We will be with you in spirit. Love, Sherril, Laura and Eliot Garahan

I'm so sorry to hear of Rich's passing, sending my condolences to his family and friends. I knew Rich many years ago when I rode at New Canaan Mounted Troop and he was at Junior Essex Troop. He and other JET riders would come up to NCMT (and we would go down to JET) for shows and inter-troop meets (and parties). He was a very kind, fun, and great guy, and I will always have good memories of him. My sympathies to you.

Catherine and Evan,
There are no words at times like these to ever fully convey the depth of compassion we want to surround you with right now in this time of sorrow. Your husband and father was obviously one-of-a-kind; a brilliant scientist, craftsman, adventurer and someone whose legacy of contributions to research that will no doubt save thousands of lives is second only to the love, laughter and devotion he showed to you, his entire family and the many friends and colleagues who loved him, too. I know his spirit is alive and well and will be with you both, only a loving thought away, now and forever. God bless you both...love you, Catherine.

Catherine & Evan,
My heart is grieving for you. Rich was incomparable - equally at home in the lab, in the stable and in the theatre world. Always a delightful Host at gatherings! Sending you so much love at this time... ~ Maria Brodeur & Ed Ludwig

Richard was never idle: building, cooking, renovating, devouring music and art, reading, repairing, creating, teaching, laughing, sharing and always … loving. He shared stillness and purpose - patiently teaching the uninitiated about science and inquiry. Generous to a fault, compassionate, gentle - how lucky I was to be invited on so much of his journey with Cathy and the great adventure of fatherhood, with Evan. He was the best of men. I have never known a better man, husband, father and friend. Sail On!

Cathy, Don and I are so saddened by this news. I'm sure Don will post his own memories, but I just wanted you to know that you and Rich were both always so kind to me and our son, Ryan, through the years at the Garden State Horse Show, and Rich was always jolly with a smile on his face and some mischievous twinkle in his eye! You were a great couple with a beautiful family, and I am so sorry about his young departure. I will always think of you with warmth and gratitude, Cathy, and now with forever prayers for you and your family. My deepest condolences, Marianne Nicholson

Cathy introduced Richard to Karen during a visit to Nantucket. Karen's husband had a passion for sailing and was building a wooden boat which she ultimately completed after his passing. Inspired connections to friendship and the sea had me thinking of this poem read by my mothers best friend at her memorial.
Gone From My Sight
I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length,
she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."
Gone where?
Gone from my sight. That is all.
She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout,
"Here she comes!"
Best love to Cathy, Evan and all Malavarca Family
